Refresh Your Perceptions to Improve Relationships
February 8, 2013We all know that thoughts are energy and that they ultimately create what you have been thinking. In relationships, if you focus on what you believe about a person, you can limit your relationship with them, because of your limited perception of them. Have you ever thought about how this could be impacting all your relationships?
For example, let’s look at the relationship you may have with your parents. Often your parents think of you as if you were still a young child. Let’s face it. If you’re 20 or 52 or 69, you’re always somebody’s baby. Even if you’ve matured into a self-reliant, fully functioning adult, your parents may still view you as a young child needing guidance and unable to think your way out of a wastepaper basket. This is a very difficult and frustrating situation.
Parental perceptions color the way they look at you and prevent them from seeing your growth. This essentially has limited your experience of them and their experience of you. No matter what you do their perception of you does not change.
Your perception of others may unconsciously be limiting your relationship with the true individual and keeping them from being all that they can be. You create your own reality and perception of all those around you. More often it is a judgment based in the past rather than a true perception of them in the moment.
Let’s say you believe that a friend is always late. You have set yourself up for the expectation of absolute tardiness from them. You are sending that energy out to them. If they are continually surrounded by that kind of thinking, then imagine how impossible it may be for them to break free of that energy, and how you have colored your perceptions.
To improve your relationships, you need to stop, and hit the refresh button for your perceptions. Recognize that change is possible. You are continually changing in your life and others are too. If you perceive that another has changed, even if they haven’t, you are changing the energy that you send out thus creating space for them to change.
If you find that the same old problems keep showing up in your relationship with another try refreshing your perceptions. Maybe it is you who refuses to see their efforts to change and thus your energy contributes to stagnation in your relationship with them. Be aware that the energy you send out based on your perceptions or misperceptions can affect your relationships.
